The Projector: Kaiju Cash Edition UPDATE

Monday UPDATED UPDATE: Warner Bros. nailed Sunday's estimate for Godzilla and Neighbors slid a mil. X-Men return Friday, our projection Thursday night.

1. Godzilla $93.2M
2. Neighbors $25M
3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $16.8M
4. Million Dollar Arm $10.5M
5. The Other Woman $6.3M

Sunday UPDATE: Arrow pointing up indeed. Godzilla went gonzo this weekend, smashing up a monstrous $93.2M debut, the second-biggest bow of 2014 behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With word of a sequel already in the works (which we may have called Thursday night), the radioactive lizard did – shocking – boffo business overseas, $103M from 64 markets, none of those 64 named "China" or "Japan" — the reptilian Kaiju is only beginning his ungodly reign of crazy cash. The weekend's other newbie, Million Dollar Arm, whiffed for Disney in fourth, Jon Hamm striking out in his first headlining role with a soft $10.5M. On the limited-release side of things, one of our favorite flicks of 2014, Chef, baked up $734K from just 74 locales, a savory $10,194 average for the Jon Favreau triple-threat comedy.

1. Godzilla $93.2M
2. Neighbors $26M
3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $16.8M
4. Million Dollar Arm $10.5M
5. The Other Woman $6.3M

Better than the 1998 Roland Emmerich abomination but with some monster-sized character flaws, Godzilla rises from the deep to smash up multiplexes this weekend in one of the most-anticipated movies of 2014. As Spidey slip-slides away, the really-big radioactive lizard picked a perfect time to reemerge — the marketplace is ripe for the taking, with its core moviegoing group – young males – jonesing for its next CGI snack.
