The Projector: Oh the Horror Edition UPDATE

Sunday UPDATE: Keeping it pithy as we're on the road. You're Next went with a whimper and The Butler had a stellar hold. That and The Mortal Instruments "franchise" looks to be one and done. Fin.

1. The Butler $17M
2. We're the Millers $13.5M
3. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones $9.3M
4. The World's End $8.9M
5. Planes $8.6M
– You're Next $7M

Horror sells. Made for pennies on the dollar, it's the amongst the most profitable – and least risky – genres going. This year has seen Mama, Evil Dead, The Purge and The Conjuring all take the top spot in their opening frame, each of those bloodletters also making the list of the year's biggest box office vs. budget successes.  This weekend sees the arrival You're Next, a micro-budgeted home invasion  offering that Lionsgate's been pushing the snot out of. And for good reason, it's pretty darn entertaining — and gory as all get out. Will You're Next be the next surprise horror hit? Based on the trend, hell yes.
  1. The Butler $17.25M
  2. You're Next $14.25M (↑)
  3. We're the Millers $12.5M
  4. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones $11.5M (↔)
