The Projector: Voltron vs. Godzilla Edition UPDATE

Sunday UPDATE: Two out of three ain't bad. While we swung for the fences and missed on Pacific Rim, nailed the weekend's other new piece of crud release, Grown Ups 2 and drilled Despicable Me 2's second weekend drop to the dime. We'll take it after the beatdown Rim received. 'Tis a shame as it's by far the best popcorn flick of 2013.

1. Despicable Me 2 $44.7M
2. Grown Ups 2 $42.5M
3. Pacific Rim $38.3M
4. The Heat $14M
5. The Lone Ranger $11.1M

Let it be known I called this over a week ago. While the vast majority of box office "analysts" are predicting doom and gloom for Guillermo del Toro's monstrously massive spectacle Pacific Rim, I've read the signs. I've noted the date. I've ignored the "tracking" that's allegedly lacking.

Last I checked it's mid-July, the height of summer, the same time frame that brought us a $160M opening for The Dark Knight Rises one year ago — a sum that would have been even larger if not for the atmosphere of fear following the shootings in Aurora, Colorado.

And here we are with one of the raddest popcorn flicks of recent note with a ticket-buying public jonesing for action after a three-week lull since the last offering, World War Z. Toss foaming-at-the-mouth fanboys into the mix and I'm taking Pacific Rim to surge behind fab word-of-mouth with a take that could top $70M. You've been warned.

1. Pacific Rim $69M
2. Despicable Me 2 $44.5M
3. Grown Ups 2 $44M
4. The Heat $15.5M
5. The Lone Ranger $13.5M
