The 2011 WWW Awards

The 2011 World Wide Weber Awards
The most memorable moments in a rather memorable year:

  • Best Story: The Royal Wedding - Before you call shenanigans, when was the last time everyone on the planet gathered around the TV to witness something communal that was actually positive? While the coverage bordered on nauseating - it's hard to top what appears to be true love. Call me a "sap" at your own peril.
  • Worst Story: Casey Anthony's acquittal - Would vie for the worst in any year.
  • Best Ending: Osama Bin Laden - Good riddance - finally.
  • Worst Ending: Entourage - Thank you HBO for one of the most entertaining series ever - bring on the movie.
  • Best Meltdown: Charlie Sheen - Gave us all something to kick around the watercooler - until the whole thing got really, really, really tired.
  • Worst Meltdown: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant - As if there were competition.
  • Best Sports Story:  Japan's win at the Women's World Cup - After what they went through - much deserved.
  • Worst Sports Story: USA's loss at the Women's World Cup - Off the high of their surreal win over Brazil - came this crushing nadir.
  • Best Movie: Drive - Stunningly stylish noir-thriller that oozes an epic "bad a**" vibe - revitalized my love of the cinema.
  • Worst Movie (tie): Country Strong & The Dilemma - Tough to pick which was worst: 'Country's' utterly inane 'Lifetime' plot featuring Tim McGraw's faux hair or the spectacularly uneven and unfunny 'Dilemma' - Ron Howard's career low; an unmitigated disaster.
  • Best Actor: Ryan Gosling - With 'Drive', 'Ides of March' and 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' - Gosling was  the "it actor" of 2011 - no longer just "that guy from 'The Notebook'".
  • Worst Actor: Ashton Kutcher - Between his pathetic denial of cheating and his wretched work on 'Two And A Half Men', Kutcher is toxic - as the producers of 'New Year's Eve' just learned.
  • Best Actress: Casey Anthony - Getting away with a unspeakable crime could be the performance of a lifetime.
  • Worst Actress: Emma Stone - Not for her acting but rather her ungodly overexposure - appeared in three movies in theaters in the same time: 'Friends With Benefits', 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' and 'The Help'. That and her 'Spiderman' hype combining for a much needed reprieve.
  • Best Song: Moby 'The Day' (Lifelike Remix) - 80's electro-legend Gary Numan would be proud of this pulsating and mesmerizing remix - the French wunderkind Lifelike turns everything he touches into pure platinum.
  • Worst Song: Anything played on the radio - With the exception of the 60's-sounding 'Pumped Up Kicks' - ominous lyrics aside.
  • Best Commercial: State Farm/Cheers Theme - Nostalgia + emotion + message = advertising gold.
  • Worst Commercial: Darth Vader/VW Passat - The whole thing felt manufactured - trying way too hard to target Gen-Xers. Maybe not the "worst" but definitely "most overrated".
  • Best Viral Video: Mountain Biker vs. Antelope - Guy cruising on his bike through the plains of Africa suddenly gets rocked by an antelope - ex-NFL safety Chuck Cecil would be proud.
  • Worst Viral Video: Rebecca Black's 'Friday' - With 180 million clicks, the 13-year-old delivered some of the deepest lyrics in the history of song: "Yesterday was Thursday, Today is Friday, Tomorrow is Saturday".
