Hear, Hear Kitty, Kitty!

Puss in Boots       WWW Score: 89%

You have to give Dreamworks Animation some credit - when a franchise as insanely successful as Shrek has nowhere left to go but outer space (Shrek X does have a certain ring to it), you've got to come up with a way to continue to cash in on a quartet of films that has raked in 3 billion bucks at the box office worldwide. Thank you execs for picking "Puss in Boots" to push on - if it had been Donkey - our relationship would have been done.

The movie revolves around the mystical, magical beans that sprout the beanstalk of legend. Puss (once again Antonio Banderas in an outstanding performance) reluctantly partnering with his on-again/off-again buddy Humpty Alexander Dumpty (Jack Galifianakis) - the egg aiming to steal said beans from Jack & Jill - ogres in their own right. The story tends to be somewhat discursive but it's the addition of one Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) that is key to keeping "Puss" such an entertaining romp. She's a feline outlaw in her own right - her extended dance-off with Puss in an underground speakeasy is utterly electrifying.

While 3D has far too often been an unnecessary accessory - "Puss" takes full advantage of the technology - the chases on rooftops are "The Bourne Ultimatum" taken to the oft astonishing third dimension. Bet the litter box that the cat in the hat will be back - "Puss in Boots" is fantastic family fun - both kids and adults will lap it up like a cold glass of milk.
